Instrumentation Questions
Measuring Resistance
- We require two banana leads. Plug one end of a lead into the low terminal, another into the high terminal (volts/diodes/resistances). Connect the lead terminals to the resistor.
- Resistance function (button with Ohm symbol). The range to select is [ ]
- The knobs to turn are [ ]
| Resistance | Theory Value | Measured Value |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone resistor | Item 3 | |
| Decade box resistor | Item 4 | Item 6 |
Measuring Current
- Drawing: DC voltage source, resistor, ammeter in series with resistor
- Current
- Most appropriate range
- Reasons for difference between theory and actual value:
- Resistor may not be of an exact resistance
- Wires offer marginal resistance
- To measure voltage, connect the leads to opposite sides of the resistor, so that it is parallel to the resistor. Measure the current by placing the ammeter in series with the resistor.
- The measured value of the voltage is []
Safety Quiz
- Death, mutilation, burns, etc.
- Some causes of electrical shock include exposed wiring, extreme voltage (incurred by overly low resistance)
- Above the “let-go” threshold, a person will no longer be able to “let go” of the electrically charged object.
- The third wire on a three-pronged plug is for ground.
- A ladder composed of non-conductive material, such as wood, would be safest to use when working around electricity.
- For fires caused by electrical equipment, one should use carbon dioxide or dry-chemical extinguishers.
- Risks of being exposed to bright light involve blindness.
- When working with magnets, one should avoid bringing a, b, c in close proximity with the magnets.
Oscilloscope Activity
- How did you estimate peak-to-peak voltage?
- As the scale is 2 volts, one may simply count the number of squares peak-to-peak (2 times the amplitude)
- Input impedance of scope
- 50 Ohms
- Voltage of waveforms read by DMM
- Ideal range: 1-10V
- Why are those voltages the case?
- AcV voltage measured the root mean squared voltage
- Converting to p2p results in the previous values
